Movies of Bert I.
Gordon
Anyone who
is a fan of the now ended Mystery Science Theatre Series from
Best Brains Productions will remember the name of Bert I
Gordon. Mr. B.I.G. as some called him was known for his giant
insect invasion movies like Earth Vs. the Spider and of course
the Attack of the Puppet People to name a couple that come to
mind. Another dreadful one was Village of the Giants.
The extent of Mr. Gordons "effects" usually involved some
type of rear screen projections or process shots to create
the enlargement or minature but you need to use the
term "special" with a grain of salt. Usually the shots looked
thrown together in a hurry and very little effort seems to have
been used to try to hide or disguise the meeting points to make
a truely special effect.
There were some exceptions but for the most of Mr. Gordons
films, any laughs along the way were not intentional. The
Mystery Science Theatre team had a real ball back in the time
they were on the air making quips about the performances and
the mediocre to rather lame projection effects effects.
His films were a good example of films that had to have
exciting poster art to try and sell attendance. This was not
uncommon with other z grade productions either, but after a
while of watching Mystery Science Theatre, you know you are in
for fun, when it was a Bert I. Gordon film coming
up.
I'll be
writing more on some of the individual productions soon from
this page.
